Following the very sad cancellation of the games in 2007 due to extreme ground conditions everyone is looking forward to the games in 2008. With the climate changes being experienced by everyone it is hoped the sun will shine on the games in 2008.Perth Highland Games have grown from strength to strength and are now one the most popular venues on the Highland Games circuit which runs from May to mid September each year. The traditional events performed by the heavyweight athletes are throwing weights for distance and height, throwing the hammer and tossing the caber which are always very popular events. In addition to those events there is highland dancing, running for adults and youths, cycling, solo piping, and very popular pipe band contest with a large number of overseas bands taking part. While there is some old records which show that Highland Games were held in Perth many years ago, the Games were revived in 1977 by a committee of the Perth Junior Chamber. After a very successful first year, the games are now run by a small committee which was set up for this purpose from a small group of local people interested in the Games and assistance during games week by a group of volunteers. The Committee are always interested to hear from anyone who is willing to assist and provide financial assistance for the Games. Interested parties should contact the Secretary Andrew Rettie at 24 Florence Place, Perth. PH1 5BH Solo piping, highland dancing and confined heavyweights commence at 10.30 a.m. Open events at 12.30 p.m. Admission charges: Adults £ 6.00 Children and Senior Citizens £ 3.00 Cars - FREE |
